Meet the author`s:

Alexandra is a Jersey girl taking any sunny day as an excuse to explore Miami & The Keys. She’s most likely to be seen with a dog leash in one hand and a camera in the other, admiring the palm trees or pointing to the distance to ask, “What’s that?” The answers inspired her to join her husband in this new edition of 111 in Miami and the Keys. A few of her favorites? Her favorite orange is Atomik’s, her favorite music is whatever’s spinning at Dante’s HiFi, and if the couple’s Foreword makes you teary-eyed, flip to her favorite diss in Toilet Seat Cut.

Born in South Florida, Gordon is an attorney, husband to Alex, and dog-dad to Maestro (Alex and Gordon’s black lab pup). Meet the author:

111 Places in Buffalo That You Must Not Miss is the realization of Brian Hayden’s lifelong passion for writing and his hometown. Born in Buffalo, Hayden developed a family newspaper called „The Hayden Herald“ in elementary school and wrote stories about Buffalo for the teen section of The Buffalo News, NeXt, while in high school. He followed his interests to Syracuse University, where he graduated with a degree in journalism, and began his career as a newspaper reporter in Northern New York. In 2014, he had the opportunity to return to Buffalo and work for the city’s tourism board, now known as Visit Buffalo. It was here that he first met travel writer Jennifer Bain, author of 111 Places in Calgary That You Must Not Miss, while providing her a tour of the city. Bain encouraged him to pitch a Buffalo installment of the book, which Hayden eventually followed through on during the COVID-19 pandemic. Writing the book and finding 111 compelling stories to tell at places across Western New York has been one of the most rewarding experiences of his career. Brian lives in Buffalo with his wife, son and their cat, Zger.

Kim Windyka is the first person her friends contact when they need to track someone down on the Internet or remember a song from their childhood that everyone else on Earth seems to have forgotten. She’s also a copy, travel, humor, and lifestyle writer who has written pieces for The Atlantic, New York Magazine, Fodor’s, McSweeney’s, The New Hampshire Visitors Guide, Metro Boston, The Outline, and more. Her favorite things – aside from the clichés of coffee and travel – are live music, vintage clothing and antiques, hip-hop dance, ‚90s pop culture, crossword puzzles, baking, street photography, historic homes, bourbon cocktails, watching skateboarding, and chocolate-covered gummy bears. She currently lives in a big 1915 house with her big orange cat, Marv, and approximately 40 houseplants.

As an artist who travels for my work, often meeting up with my touring musician partner, I sometimes have years like this one where I've visited in 10 different countries in the past 12 months. It's taught me a lot about how to get a meaningful taste of a place when passing through quickly. My trick is to act like I'm NOT traveling. When I land in a new place I immediately look for a community bathhouse or swimming pool and start my assimilation by sweating or swimming with local strangers. I also sometimes pretend I'm a tourist in my own town, visiting a historical society or taking a walking tour. It helps me see where I live anew...

Philip is a cultural sociologist and heritage scholar based at the University of Lancashire (UK), where he directs the Institute for Dark Tourism Research (iDTR) – yes, that’s a real thing, and no, it’s not as creepy as it sounds (well, maybe just a little). He’s spent his academic career exploring how we deal with death, memory, and the macabre in modern society, all while managing to keep a sombre face in some very strange places! With a passion for exploring why we remember our significant dead, how we represent the deceased, and the way we consume trauma in visitor economies, Philip has become an international leading voice in the field of ‘dark tourism’. Philip has given public lectures in a disused prison, a decommissioned nuclear bunker, and the former Gestapo headquarters of Norway! When he’s not lecturing about dark tourism or writing about difficult heritage, you’ll find him roaming the Scottish landscape in search of places of pain and shame – and of course, the perfect gin and tonic.
